These two slippery creatures figured prominently, albeit by chance, in our meeting on July 17. A warm summer evening saw a goodly gathering of Toastmasters, guests and Hawaiian shirts come together for an evening that featured two icebreaker speeches and two advanced orations. One of our ‘debutant’ speakers is actually doing the basic Competent Communicator program for the third time, always a worthwhile exercise.
A glance around the room revealed a veritable ‘United Nations’ with members and guests hailing from Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Indonesia, China, Austria, Russia, Belgium, India, Poland and South Africa.
We followed up the educational part of our meeting with a rather lengthy business session, mainly to discuss what educational extras we want to conduct during the new club year. Our next meeting on August 7 will feature a brief recapitulation of how to structure Table Topics (or any other speech, for that matter), a presentation that the club experienced in mid-December. This will be in preparation for the club’s upcoming Table Topics contest in September. Still another meeting could be dedicated to Tall Tales which, by the way, is also an official Toastmasters contest discipline. And that’s no Tall Tale.
